Prof. Dr. Marc F. Schetelig

Prof. Dr. Marc F. Schetelig is a renowned expert in insect biotechnology, holding the position of Professor for Insect Biotechnology in Plant Protection at Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany. His work is centered on eco-friendly pest control methods, encompassing both transgenic and non-transgenic approaches. A significant part of his research is dedicated to refining the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), a targeted pest control strategy vital for integrated pest management programs. He has made substantial contributions to applying these methods to insects of agricultural and medical importance, such as mosquitoes, and has conducted thorough research on the stability and risk assessment of transgenic systems.

Prof. Schetelig holds a Dr. rer. nat. in Developmental Biology from Georg-August-University Göttingen and a Diploma in Biochemistry from the University of Bayreuth, Germany. His notable career spans roles such as Research Group Leader at the Fraunhofer Society, Emmy Noether Research Group Leader at JLU Gießen, and Molecular Biologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is also an experienced strategy consultant and advisor for international agencies including the FAO, IAEA, WHO, and the German Federal Foreign Office.

Prof. Schetelig has led numerous research projects funded by Horizon Europe, DFG, and HORT Innovation/Macquarie University, Australia, focusing on transgenic and non-transgenic pest control methods, novel SIT lines, and integrated pest and vector management strategies. He also contributes significantly to the scientific community as an editorial member and reviewer for various journals, and collaborates with several funding agencies and consulting organizations.
